Persons With Limited English Proficiency

49ͼ¿â is not an English as a Second Language (ESL) certified school and students are expected to be able to complete their coursework in English. However, the College will take reasonable steps to ensure that persons with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) have
meaningful access and an equal opportunity to participate in our services, activities, programs and other benefits. The policy of 49ͼ¿â is to ensure meaningfulcommunication with students with LEP, including individuals with hearing impairments, and
their authorized representatives involving their medical conditions and treatment. The policy also provides for communication of information contained in vital documents, including but not limited to, Applications for Admission, FERPA forms, Federal Financial Aid forms, etc. All
interpreters, translators and other aids needed to comply with this policy shall be provided without cost to the person being served, and students and their families will be informed of the availability of such assistance free of charge.

Limited language assistance will be provided through use of competent bilingual staff, contracts or formal arrangements with local organizations providing interpretation or translation services, or technology and telephonic interpretation services. All staff will be provided notice of this policy and procedure, and staff that may have direct contact with individuals with LEP will be trained in effective communication techniques, including the effective use of an interpreter and/or interpreter software.

Auxiliary aids include services, equipment, and procedures that allow students and/or their parents or representatives with disabilities access to learning and activities in and out of the classroom. They include but are not limited to: sign language interpreters, real time captioning services, adaptive technology, alternative media, exam accommodations, etc. Students requesting adaptive equipment or sign language interpreters must request these services in a timely manner (preferably 6 months in advance) giving the Institution time to locate and secure
resources being requested.

49ͼ¿â will conduct a regular review of the language access needs of our student population, as well as update and monitor the implementation of this policy and these procedures, as necessary.
